The Hubble Space Telescope's First Servicing Mission

Shuttle

This photograph was taken during the first servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope. Here, astronaut Story Musgrave is on the end of the robotic arm of the Space Shuttle Endeavor so he can reach equipment near the top of the telescope.

The Hubble Space Telescope is designed to be serviced regularly by astronauts visiting it with the Space Shuttle. During the first servicing mission, the astronauts replaced the solar panels, installed a special device to correct a flaw in the main mirror, replaced the gyroscopes and magnetometers, and upgraded the onboard computer. The Space Shuttle Discovery will visit the Hubble Space Telescope for its second servicing mission in early 1997.
