Mission specialist Ron Parise operating Astro-2

Shuttle

Mission specialist Ron Parise is shown here pausing during an Astro-2 observation of Jupiter during the Shuttle mission STS-67. Dr. Parise is an astronomer who was selected by NASA to be the mission specialist for the two Astro missions. It was much easier for NASA to train an astronomer as an astronaut to operate the three ultraviolet telescopes in the Astro package than it was to train an astronaut as an astronomer.
